CBA’s undergraduate goals

Paper details

The first outcome listed in CBA’s undergraduate goals and outcomes plan is communication. To measure this goal students will complete a writing essay that will be evaluated by the CBA Writing Lab. The Writing Assessment can be completed at any time during the semester but before the deadline. Use the link below to download the Word document that has the instructions. After completing your essay, use the same link below to upload it to Blackboard. If you successfully upload your essay you will see a green icon in your gradebook. Click the icon and double check that you did indeed attach a file. Only Microsoft Word files will be accepted; other formats will be deleted. If you upload the wrong file, contact one of the instructors to remove the attempt so that you can resubmit. Blank essays will be deleted.

The essay should be at least two full pages long, plus a bibliography/references page (total of at least three pages). Our emphasis is content, structure, analysis, and development of your point of view. Our experience has shown that it is impossible to write a sufficiently formulated, well-thought essay in less than two pages. Use the following formatting

Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx)
Times New Roman
12 pt. font
Double spaced (including between paragraphs–don’t add extra space between paragraphs)
Tab at .5 inch at beginning of paragraphs
1-inch margins
If you follow the formatting correctly, your essay will be at least 3600 characters (including spaces) in length. You can check the character count in Microsoft Word under the [review] tab by selecting the [proofing] option. Papers that do not meet the requirements will not be accepted and will be deleted.

Other Western Civilization: Athenian Democracy vs. American Democracy

In this assignment you will be writing the same essay twice.

After reading some editorials and commentaries found on the Ancient Greece LibGuide (Athens section) about ancient Athenian democracy and American democracy, you will write one essay attempting to persuade your reader of the similarities between the two.

In the second essay you will attempt to persuade your reader just as strongly that there are too many differences or dissimilarities between the two to draw comparisons.

The goal of this assignment is to get you to write just as passionately and convincingly on opposite sides of an issue.

Please used the sources below as citations

Postcolonial Literature Essay

Postcolonial Literature Essay
I will attach sample writings we have done so far in the additional materials.

Introduction:

We began the Unit with “Heart of Darkness,” explored the narrator’s encounters with Africans and, as readers, faced the horror lying at the heart of Western imperialism. To think theoretically about Marlow and Kurtz’s racist attitudes to Africans, we augmented an understanding of the novel with critical theoretical readings by Achebe, Hawkins and Said. Moving on and reading Said again, we discussed the motives behind the tendency to treat people unlike ourselves as inferior “Others” and linked that response to political oppression and subjugation (apartheid and Jim Crow). In, “Something Out There” we are given a glimpse of the struggle to escape the fully-sanctioned political imposition of white supremacy and, in “Draupadi” we were reminded that postcolonial women face their own brand of “Otherness.”

Topic:

Drawing on these sources above, not necessarily on all of them or exclusively, please submit an essay within the broad parameters of racism and gender relations in “The Madonna of Excelsior.” Before deciding on your specific topic, review our readings and think about the work we have done, then choose a title for your paper and formulate a thesis statement. For a longer explanation of my expectations for your essay, please see, “Ten Tips on Writing an Essay” in Course Materials.

TGS Critical Thinking
See attached for detail instruction.
Steps
Step 1: Review the TGS Critical Thinking Rubric (found on the Content page). This rubric is intended to serve as a framework for critical thinking. Use it to structure your thinking for this assignment and for others in your studies at UMUC.
The framework (rubric) is based on FOUR key steps, each of which has several sub-steps, as shown in the full rubric.
1. Identify and clearly explain the main issue or problem under critical consideration.
2. Gather and analyze information to explore/investigate the issue or problem.
3. Consider and analyze other possible viewpoints, conclusions or decision/solutions to the issue or problem
4. Develop well-reasoned ideas, conclusions and/or decisions/solutions, checking them against relevant criteria and benchmarks
Step 2: Read the Markkula case studies, then choose ONE to examine in this essay. (which is Online Privacy: https://www.scu.edu/ethics/privacy/case-study-on-online-privacy/). Employ the TGS Critical Thinking Rubric as framework for analyzing the case. Begin with an Introduction that states the purpose of your analysis. Use the FOUR key steps in the rubric as the format framework of a short position paper (details below). Employ the sub-steps within each of the four key steps to further direct your analysis and writing.

QUANT METHODS

Development and analysis of a decision tree in Excel, and a written report of the results. If you are using a MAC and the Decision Tree add in will not work on your MAC I suggest you use a PC .All of the necessary information is included in the attached case. Read the information carefully and clarify any questions. The purchase option and the application for variance are of particular importance. Are these decisions or events? How should they be considered? Where are they in the decision tree? Don’t lose sight of the primary decision Bill must make: Should he hire the consultant or should he not hire the consultant.Be sure you understand the meaning of “net proceeds”. Most business majors should know this term, but other majors may need to check the definition. Be sure your written report includes all of the elements of the quantitative analysis approach, and makes a firm, supported, recommendation to Bill.
